Meditation is a practice.  As defined by The American Heritage Dictionary,
Practice v. 1. To do or perform habitually or customarily; To make a habit of.  2. To do or perform repeatedly in order to acquire or polish a skill.  3. To work at.

Make a commitment to practice
Give yourself permission to be alone without distraction
Set the timer (choose a reasonable increment of time, start small aiming for a consistent practice)
Sit upright aware, relaxed and comfortable
Close your eyes or set your gaze softly on a fixed point about 3 feet in front of you

Begin with awareness of the breath.
Counting, one breath in, one breath out
Just this breath and this breath
Aware of the sensation of breathing
Feeling the breath on the tip of the nostrils
Or in the rise and fall of the chest
Allowing thoughts to come and go
Returning over and over again to the awareness of breathing
Following the breath
If you loose focus simply begin again
Just breathing
Aware of the breath coming in
Aware of the breath going out
Noticing your thoughts, just notice and let them go
Breathing
Just this breath and this breath

Make a commitment to yourself
Make a commitment to practice
Returning over and over to the tide of the breath
Breathing in and breathing out.
